East Timor fighting for its fair share of prosperity.

Rating: 8/10 (1 vote )

East Timor is one of the poorest countries in Asia. Its only economic hope for the future lies in massive reserves of oil and gas in the Timor Sea. In many countries with large mineral recourses, big oil and mining companies are trying to make as much money as possible. Nothing wrong with that, but they should pay their fair share of tax in the countries they get the stuff out of the earth. Most of the times these companies use sophisticated bookkeeping techniques to transfer the profits to those place with the lowest corporate tax rates. Most of the times these places are different from the place the real profits are made. East Timor is now taking on some of the world's biggest private energy companies, demanding they pay their fair share of tax on the oil & gas Timor says is being stolen from them.
